When the foot leaves the pedal, the spring pushes the pressure disc in the direction of the clutch disc,thereby squeezing the flywheel. This locks the engine to the transmission input shaft so that they rotate at the same speed. The amount of clutch force delends on the friction between the clutch plates and the flywheel and the pressure of the spring against the pressure plate.Friction in the clutch works the same way as the cylinder block described in the friction section,except that it presses the spring against the clutch disc instead of relying on gravity to push the object to the ground.
